Rumiko Takahashi began the Ranma 1/2 manga as her third major series (following URUSEI YATSURA and Maison Ikkoku) in August 1987. The manga was serialized in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine until March 1996. VIZ Media licensed it in English.
The manga was previously adapted into two anime series by Studio Deen: Ranma 1/2 and Ranma 1/2 Nettohen. The two anime together ran for a total of 161 episodes from 1989 to 1992. In addition, the series also got 12 OVAs and three films. A live-action TV special was released in 2011.
The story Ranma and Genma Saotome, a father-son duo who end up falling in a cursed lake and getting cursed. Ranma’s curse has him turning into a girl every time he is splashed with cold water (and reverting when splashed with warm water), while his father turns into a panda under the same conditions. The fact that Ranma is set to marry Akane complicates this further, as she is does not end up liking her fiance at their first meeting.
