They saw people like Winsor McCay and Walt Disney('s staff) bringing cartoon figures to life and thought they should give it a try too. There were a few early shorts that still survive today, like 1917's The Dull Sword, but to the rest of the world, Japanese animation came into its own during the post-war era when the likes of Astro Boy and Speed Racer started catching on.
